Content Training Programme
A Report - 7th & 8th August, 2009
Day 2 (8th August):
Day 2 began with Recap and Recall of yesterday’s sessions in an interactive manner where the participants presented Day One’s learning. The agenda consisted of two sessions. Session 3 on Content Design For Small Scale Models and Session 4 on Training using Videos.
Ms. Pramila (external trainer) conducted the first session. She explained the importance of having a structured lesson plan while designing Small scale models. She also suggested to keep in mind the Goal, Knowledge imparted and the extra information that can be given to them through hear/ read and research by drawing 3 concentric circles with the inner most circle containing the Goal, the middle, Knowledge and the outer most circle containing Hear/ Read / Research.
The participants were divided into their respective subject groups and were asked to develop a specific lesson plan.
On behalf of the Tamil Reading and Spoken team, Mr. Majeeth explained the reading card activity and how it is useful in creating a lesson plan for reading. He then demonstrated the activity and presented the outcomes in the above mentioned model .He explained that the goal was to make the children read sentences. Knowledge consisted of reading all the words and extra information maybe give them activity sheets.
The Maths team was represented by Mr. Raghu who took the lesson plan of Addition with carry forward. First he identified the difficulties and emphasized on teaching the correct method. He demonstrated the activity using number cards on a board.
The goal was to teach students to do addition with carry forward. The knowledge gained was that, the children will learn addition with and without carry forward. The extra information given to them would be in the form of activity sheets or simple projects.
Ms Priya presented the English reading and Spoken team’s lesson plan of teaching the children 32 different animals using flash cards and identification. The goal here was to teach the children 32 different animals. The children would be able to identify 32 different animals, this was the knowledge they would gain. The extra information given to them would be the animal’s food, habitat etc.
The Science team comprising of Meena, Mani and Kalai came up with various experiments and examples used to illustrate Newton’s laws of motion. The goal here was to teach the concepts in each of the 3 laws of motion. The knowledge, the children would gain is complete understanding of the Laws of motion. Extra information would be in the form of projects.
Ms Pramila put forth her suggestions:
- Lay emphasis on associating the known and the unknown i.e first start with the known concept and then link it to the unknown concept for better understanding.
- Take every day examples to teach concepts.
- Have a structured content in mind.
The session concluded with the Recap of the lessons learnt by the participants.
Session 4: Transferring Content –Training using videos
The Post Lunch session began with Ms. Anushka and Mr. Tarun explaining the 8 most important parts of a video camera. The participants were divided into 2 groups and each member got a chance to handle the camera. Ms. Anushka explained the factors to be kept in mind before a video shoot.
- Position of the sounds in the room
- Lighting of the room
- Always perform a test shoot
- Background has to been taken care
- Looking room should be there to have better effect
She then explained the different styles of interviewing:
- The interviewer shoots the video and also asks questions.
- There is a separate camera person to shoot the video.
In each of these styles special parameters had to be kept in mind during the shoot.
Anushka then spoke about adapting these techniques while shooting an Activity Demonstration.
The important factors to be kept in mind while shooting an activity:
- Rehearse the lines that will be spoken.
- Speak slowly
- Make a list of the required materials for the demonstration.
- If required repeat the instructions
- Step by step shooting of the activity can also be done for better clarity.
The participants were shown pictures of different kinds of shots based on the distance from the camera i.e close-up, mid shot and long shot.
The participants were then divided into two groups and were asked to shoot a sample activity, with Ansuhka assisting one group and Tarun the other. The clippings were then viewed and the drawbacks were enumerated.
A sample video was shot by Tarun on an activity demonstrated by the participants and was shown to them. The session concluded with the feedback and lessons learnt by the participants.
The two day programme concluded with the participants giving their written feedback on the training programme, their expectations and its fulfillment.
