Padippum Inikkum: Evaluation of Children's Reading Levels

We have a simple reading test which evaluates the child’s reading skill and categorizes it into one of the following five levels.

5 Reading Levels
Level 4: Child Reads stories fluently
Level 3: Child Reads sentences but not stories
Level 2: Child Reads words but not sentences
Level 1: Child Reads letters but not words
Level 0: Child Cannot even identify letters

The teacher evaluates reading levels of all children. This helps her understand what each child knows and provides her a clear aim – Move All Children up to Level 4!

After the evaluation, the teacher displays the reading levels on charts in the class. By marking the reading levels every 2 months, the improvement made by each child becomes clearly visible.
Teachers hold public functions and give certificates to children who can read fluently. They also pledge to ensure that within a few months all children will be reading fluently.

The evaluation and the public certificate functions create a momentum and excitement about the reading campaign. It motivates teachers, parents and children and makes them focus on learning to read.
