AID Wins Times of India Social Impact Award for Global Contribution to India

YOU’VE GATHERED DIAMONDS & JEWELS FROM ALL OVER INDIA, SAYS PM AT THE TIMES OF INDIA SOCIAL IMPACT AWARDS
- Times of India, 3rd Oct 2011.

By convention, the Prime Minister of India does not generally attend public functions on certain days of the year, October 2 being one of them. But because The Times of India Social Impact Awards, in partnership with JP Morgan, represent a cause close to Mahatma Gandhi’s heart, and resonated with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he was moved to walk the extra mile (without breaking with tradition completely—he did not deliver a formal speech, or give away any Awards). When he came on stage to be photographed with the Awardees, he spoke to each one personally, discussed their work, and fondly remembered previous associations with some of the Awardees — he hailed the Aroles, the founders of the Comprehensive Rural Health Project, as great role models. Once the photographers had got their pictures, the PM went back to speaking with the Awardees, finally tearing himself away after a few gentle reminders from his team. But before leaving, he invited several of them to write to him about their successful experiments to see if they could be replicated on a nationwide scale. He also had praise for the TOI Awards. “It’s a wonderful idea. This is just what India needs to be able to change things and make a difference. Such work rarely gets noticed by the media these days and I am glad that The Times of India has taken the initiative to showcase such outstanding efforts. You have collected diamonds and jewels from all over the country,” he said, referring to the Awardees. He is seen in this picture with all the Awardees, the managing director of The Times Group Vineet Jain (to the PM’s left) and JP Morgan chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon.
