There is a huge gap between the need for good quality children’s educational material in Tamil and the actual availability. Eureka Books was created to bridge this gap. Eureka Books produces and distributes low-cost educational materials to reach the poorest children across Tamilnadu. Eureka Books has been inspired and supported by AID India, a non-profit organization working in Tamilnadu and other states in India for the past 10 years.
Since 2003, Eureka Books has been producing various types of educational materials – concept booklets, books, posters, practical kits, story cards, VCDs and so on. Below is a brief description of a couple of samples of materials.
Concept Booklets
These are booklets that explain one topic in science clearly through experiments in a cartoon-based dialogue format. Each booklet is developed after interactions with students, identifying the important doubts and questions they have on the topic. Eureka Books currently has more than 20 titles in science and mathematics in both English and Mathematics.
Practical Kits
Children learn best through activities and experiments. Eureka Books has developed simple, yet low-cost science experiment kits which contain day-to-day material, but which can be used to do stunning experiments. A reading kit by the name “Padippum Inikkum” has fun games and activities to get children to read. Another kit has been developed for Balwadi children in order to improve their motor, sensory, language and visual skills. Similar kits for mathematics are also under development.
In addition to these types of material, Eureka Books also brings out story cards and picture books for children. Eureka Books is able to provide material at low costs due to the large numbers. We also keep the profit margins as low as possible in order to ensure reach to all children.
