- Availability of Assistance: The disaster is so huge that Government‘s scheme of providing 100 kg grain and Rs.2250/- is not sufficient. People travel for kilometers to reach to Government Rahat centers placed at the main land. Sometimes they return empty handed after waiting for 1-2 days as their name is not found in the list with the officials. What list? How can we distinguish anyone as BPL and IPL during such times when everyone has lost everything?
- Rahat Kendra scenario: Agreed government has opened number of Rahat Shivir’s where people get food and shelter. The Shivirs are occupied by only 10% of the population affected. When we visited Triveniganj camp the scene was unbelievable. Small children were waiting with a plate in their hands till 3’o clock in the evening for one day’s meal. No milk for kids, forget the quality of food. NGOs like Parivartan are fighting and were on hunger strike in front of District Magistrate’s office to open more Shivir’s for people. I also got a feedback for one of the volunteers that government official informed that they don’t have Cooking gas to cook food. And here we sit and call ourselves a “Developing Nation”.
- Winter the biggest threat ahead: It’s another big threat to life coming up for people in Flood affected area; which needs to be addressed at an urgent basis. Woolen clothes, shoes, Blankets are required on a large scale to save lives. People are homeless and there is nothing to protect them from the chilling winters for which Bihar is known for.
- Media & communication: For everyone who thinks that only the front page news is news - please visit Bihar. Strange and shocking why the terrible condition of Bihar is kept hidden from the world at this moment when its need help from every corner of our nation.
- Relief work: NGOs like AID, Goonj, Parivartan, Brahmkumari, Veeraytan, Ekta Parishad, Sewa Bharti, Aasaram Bapu foundation, Casa, Caritas, Redcross society, Oxfam, Unicef, Pratham are trying their best to help people there. But seeing the present scenario there is no denying that this is not enough. A salute to all those volunteers there who have not given up hopes and are fighting to get life back to normal.
- Rehabilitation: Broken homes, destructed roads, bridges and infrastructure, no clue where will it start rebuilding from. I could consider as the last problem in front of all the above mentioned problems but it has to be addressed urgently to get their lives to normal.
What lies ahead…unending list of problem, struggle and people’s undying spirit for fighting against odds. For all of you:
Who think it’s over: No it’s just the beginning…beginning of unending problems and unending struggle.
Who think Bihar is used to this: No they are not. In fact no one can be used to disaster & death.
Who think they will overcome it by their own: No it’s not possible as even we need a hand to get up after stumbling down.
How can you help?
- Collection of materials: You can take up a task of collecting woolen materials, tarpaulin etc Medicines from corporate, neighborhood and within friends and send it across to NGOs in your city.
- Doctor’s help: If you have contacts of doctors please encourage them to visit Bihar for some days through NGO AID.
- Fund collection: You can take up fund collection drive in your offices and hand it over to genuine NGOs working there.
- Spread a word: Let people know of the reality and sufferings of the Bihar flood affected people.
It’s a call for the Nation and its country men - please wake up to this curse and stand by the victims of Bihar flood. |
